Antigone describes herself as a “strange, in-between” thing, and we have placed her in this strange, in-between set. We may be familiar with her story, of this daughter of Oedipus defying an unjust edict of her King, when in fact everything about her situation is strange, foreign and distant to us. I like what Anne Carson said about Antigone wanting us to listen to the sound "of what happens when everything normal, musical, careful, conventional, or pious is taken away." Her world has been reduced to an impossible zero. She may be autonomous, but she is not free. She reminds us how deeply bound we are by blood, by faith, and by love.
