We created this play together, from the ground up, to share with you. Here are some things we would remind ourselves of while working on this play:
There are some things that we know about the play and some things that we don’t know. We know that three women are in prison, but we do not know why they are being punished. Neither do we know where or when the play takes place, but we do know that it could take place any time, anywhere, even the present. The play explores the relationship between these women and their community, but we do not know the name of their community or much about their beliefs. Through their recollections, we glimpse their past, perhaps even their present, but we do not know their future.
As a company of artists, we are committed to working in the in-between space, of the known and unknown. Where the differences and discrepancies between mystery and the familiar can stand, without neutralizing each other. This in-between place is charged by the imagination—the same thing that charges the women of our story. They play games. They fantasize. They invent and disrupt their own status quo, despite being in prison. Their play may pass the time, but it is also subversive. It gives and affirms life. It is an approximation of the freedom they desire, but not the solution. We are called to witness. We are called to act.
This play was created by a fiercely talented group of individuals in deep and generous collaboration. Thank you to Jim, who conceived, wrote and shared his profoundly beautiful and personal play with us. Katelyn and Brittney, who have worked together for years, reunited and teamed up again for an intimate collaboration. Through mutual support, insight, innovation and imagination, they danced the play up onto its feet. Kaleena Rivera, Gabby Kadoo and Violet Shindler offered unwavering commitment and dedication to the dancing and we are grateful for their compassion, bravery, grace, humor and love.
